Process FiltrationFor Power Generation

A power plant is a water machine that happens to make electricity, and every one of its water streams carries solids somewhere they should not go. Our process filtration power generation scope puts the right barrier in every stream: industrial water filtration power plant duty on raw and cooling water, feed water protection ahead of the boiler, and condensate cleanup in the steam cycle itself, all engineered as stage one of the complete power plant water treatment system.

The Stream Atlas

Four Water Streams, Four Filtration Duties

Follow the water through the plant and the filtration story tells itself. Each stream has its own contaminants, its own consequences, and its own correct answer within the process filtration power generation scope.

01 Raw Water Intake
What ArrivesRiver, reservoir, or well water carrying silt, sand, algae, and seasonal debris, heaviest in the wet season.
What It ThreatensPumps, heat exchangers, and every treatment stage downstream of the intake.
The AnswerScreens, media filters, and bag stages take the bulk load out first, cheaply.
02 Cooling Water Circuit
What CirculatesTower water concentrating airborne dust, scale fragments, and biological growth with every cycle.
What It ThreatensCondenser tubes and heat exchangers, where deposits directly tax unit output.
The AnswerPower plant cooling water filtration on a sidestream keeps solids permanently suppressed.
03 Boiler Feed Train
What FlowsTreated make-up water heading through RO and demineralisation toward the boiler.
What It ThreatensRO membranes foul and boiler surfaces scale if solids slip through.
The AnswerA staged boiler feed water filtration system guarding every polishing step.
04 Condensate Return
What ReturnsSteam-cycle condensate carrying iron oxide corrosion products at ppb concentrations.
What It ThreatensPolisher resin beds, boiler tubes, and turbine deposits over thousands of hours.
The AnswerCondensate polishing filtration support: crud capture before the resin, detailed below.
The Size Ladder

Six Steps Down the Micron Staircase

Good filtration is sequential: each step removes what it is sized for and protects the finer, more expensive step below it. Skipping a step does not save money; it just moves the cost downstream.

500 µmStrainers
Coarse GuardBaskets and screens stop debris, shells, and vegetation at the intake.
100 µmScreens
Fine ScreeningAutomatic and manual screens handle sand and coarse silt loads.
25 µmBag Stage
Bulk CaptureHigh-capacity bag filters absorb the heavy suspended solids economically.
5 µmCartridge
Process ProtectionDepth and pleated cartridges guard RO membranes and fine equipment.
1 µmFine Cartridge
Polishing DutyFine elements for feed water and sensitive process points.
<1 µmSub-Micron
Critical CaptureAbsolute-rated elements for condensate crud and final protection.
High pressure duty included: feed water and condensate services run hot and pressurised, so a high pressure filtration system power plant installation pairs the right element with housings, seals, and materials rated for the line, not just the flow. The same staged logic applies to every boiler feed water filtration system: each step down the staircase buys the next one a longer, cheaper life.
Four Technologies

The Liquid Filtration Toolkit, One Quadrant at a Time

Every liquid filtration system power industry installation is built from four basic technologies. The engineering is knowing which quadrant each duty belongs in, and when to combine them in series.

01 Bulk Solids, Economically
Bag Filtration

Single and multi-bag housings hold litres of solids per element, making them the economical workhorse for raw water, cooling circuits, and pre-filtration ahead of finer stages. Quick changeouts and low cost per kilogram of captured solids keep operating budgets honest.

Best at: high dirt loads, 25–100 µm duty
02 Precision, Rated and Proven
Cartridge Filtration

Depth and pleated industrial filter cartridges power generation duty depends on: defined micron ratings from 25 µm to sub-micron, absolute-rated where it matters, protecting RO membranes, feed trains, and condensate service where a rating is a promise, not a suggestion.

Best at: fine, defined-rating protection duty
03 Continuous, Self-Maintaining
Automatic Self-Cleaning Filtration

Motorised screen and suction-scanning filters clean themselves in service, flushing captured solids without stopping flow. On cooling water sidestreams and raw water duty with relentless solids, they replace element consumption with a small, predictable flush stream.

Best at: continuous duty, no element changeouts
04 Depth, In Bulk
Media & Multimedia Filtration

Sand, anthracite, and garnet beds filter through depth, handling large flows of raw and make-up water ahead of membranes. Backwashable and patient, media vessels are the classic first stage of an industrial water filtration power plant train, and still the right one.

Best at: large flows, upstream of RO and demin
Engineering Focus

Two Duties That Decide Plant Water Reliability

One lives at ppb scale inside the steam cycle at the heart of turbine water treatment filtration; the other processes tonnes of circulating water per hour. Both repay engineering attention with availability.

Crud Filtration: Guarding the Condensate Polisher

Condensate returning from the condenser looks distilled, and is quietly carrying iron oxide corrosion products, magnetite and hematite shed by the entire steam-water circuit, typically at parts-per-billion concentrations that spike hard during startups. This crud is the enemy of everything expensive: it fouls polisher resin, deposits in boiler tubes, and rides steam into the turbine. Condensate polishing filtration puts an absolute-rated barrier upstream of the mixed-bed polisher, capturing oxides before they reach the resin.

The economics are unglamorous and compelling: protected resin beds live out their full design life instead of retiring early, regeneration chemical consumption falls, startup chemistry holds clear sooner, and the boiler sees cleaner water every hour of the year. For combined cycle plants that start frequently, and for any turbine water treatment filtration strategy that takes deposits seriously, crud capture is the cheapest insurance in the water plant.

Resin LifePre-filtration protects polisher beds and cuts regeneration chemistry

Sidestream Filtration: The Condenser's Quiet Bodyguard

A cooling tower is a giant air scrubber: every hour it washes dust, pollen, and debris out of the air and into the circulating water, where it settles in low-velocity zones and bakes onto condenser tubes. Full-flow filtration of thousands of cubic metres per hour is impractical; filtering a continuous sidestream, commonly a few percent of circulating flow, is not. Solids are captured faster than they accumulate, and the whole circuit trends cleaner week after week.

Clean circulating water pays three ways: condenser tubes keep their heat transfer and the vacuum holds, deposits stop sheltering biological growth so chemical treatment works at lower doses, and maintenance shifts from emergency tube cleaning to planned housekeeping. Effective power plant cooling water filtration is not a luxury stage; it is how the cooling circuit protects the megawatts.

VacuumClean condenser tubes hold design heat transfer and unit output
Lower DosingLess deposit shelter makes water chemistry programs work harder
Specifying It Right

Three Dials Every Filter Specification Must Set

A filter is three decisions wearing one housing. Set all three dials deliberately and the system performs for years; leave one on default and it will introduce itself later.

µm
Rating, and What It Really Means

A micron number without a qualifier is marketing. Nominal ratings capture most particles of that size; absolute ratings guarantee a defined efficiency at it. Membrane protection and condensate duty demand absolute ratings; bulk duty can economise with nominal. Across industrial filter cartridges power generation buyers compare, the honest datasheets declare both. Specify the word, not just the number.

ΔP
Flow, Pressure Drop, and Real Dirt

Size elements for the dirt load you actually have, not the clean-water curve in the catalogue. Generous filtration area lowers starting ΔP, stretches change intervals, and cuts lifetime element spend. In a high pressure filtration system power plant service, housing and closure ratings are part of the same calculation.

°C
Materials, Temperature, Chemistry

Element media, seals, and housing metallurgy must all clear the stream's temperature and chemistry, condensate runs hot, cooling water carries treatment chemicals, and raw water varies by season. Compatibility is decided at specification time; discovered later, it is called a failure analysis.
