CLEANER COMPRESSED AIR, BETTER PRODUCTS: FILTRATION SOLUTIONS FOR PLASTIC AND RUBBER MANUFACTURING

Compressed air plays an essential role in plastic and rubber manufacturing. It powers pneumatic cylinders, controls valves, moves raw materials, supports moulding equipment, and assists with cooling, cleaning, and finishing processes. However, untreated compressed air can carry dust, water, oil aerosols, pipe scale, and other contaminants into sensitive production equipment.

A properly designed compressed air filtration system helps remove these contaminants before they cause product defects, equipment damage, or unexpected production interruptions.

Where Compressed Air Is Used

Plastic and rubber factories use compressed air across many applications, including:

  • Injection moulding and blow moulding
  • Extrusion and thermoforming
  • Pneumatic conveying of plastic pellets and powders
  • Operating cylinders, valves, grippers, and actuators
  • Product cooling and mould release
  • Air knives, cleaning, and surface preparation
  • Leak testing and quality inspection
  • Cutting, trimming, and finishing
  • Robotic handling and automated assembly
  • Packaging finished products

The required air quality depends on how the air is used. General pneumatic equipment may tolerate a different contamination level from applications where compressed air directly contacts a product, mould surface, coating, or finished component.

How Contamination Affects Production

Water inside a compressed air system can contribute to corrosion, frozen lines, blocked valves, and inconsistent operation. Oil aerosols and vapours may contaminate moulds or product surfaces, while solid particles can damage pneumatic components and create scratches or visible defects.

These problems can lead to rejected products, additional cleaning, unstable cycle times, premature component failure, and unplanned downtime. In precision manufacturing, even small contamination levels can affect appearance, dimensional consistency, coating adhesion, and final-product quality.

Building an Effective Filtration System

A complete air-treatment system may use several filtration stages. Water separators remove bulk liquid, while coalescing filters reduce fine water and oil aerosols. Particulate filters capture dry particles and pipe scale. Where very low oil-vapour levels are required, activated-carbon filtration may provide additional treatment.

Filters should be combined with a suitable dryer because filters alone cannot control water vapour or pressure dew point. The correct arrangement depends on the compressor type, airflow, operating pressure, required air quality, production environment, and sensitivity of the application.

Improving Reliability and Energy Efficiency

A dirty or incorrectly sized filter can create excessive pressure drop. The compressor must then work harder to maintain pressure at the point of use, increasing energy consumption and operating costs.

Regular differential-pressure checks, condensate-drain inspections, and scheduled element replacement help maintain efficient airflow. Replacement intervals should consider operating hours, contamination load, pressure drop, and the manufacturer’s recommendations, not appearance alone.

Note From Our Expert

Effective compressed air filtration is not simply about installing the finest available filter. Selecting unnecessary filtration can increase pressure loss and maintenance costs, while insufficient treatment may leave production equipment and products exposed to contamination.

Our engineering team can evaluate your compressed-air demand, contamination risks, required air quality, pressure conditions, and critical points of use.
