Ductwork — Dust Highway

The ductwork is your dust collection system’s highway. To keep it efficient, check the critical parameters below: speed, size, and length/straight-run practices.

Overview

Dust collection tips and guidelines for ductwork (your “dust highway”). The right velocity, proper sizing, and adequate straight runs prevent dust fallout, abrasion, and uneven loading that shortens filter life.

  • Speed: Maintain conveying velocity to prevent settling or abrasion.
  • Size: Avoid undersized ducts (abrasion, patches) and oversized ducts (fallout).
  • Length: Provide straight runs into the collector for even loading.

Speed (Conveying Velocity)

15–20 m/s (≈ 3,500–4,000 fpm)

Below 15 m/s

Dust falls out of the airstream, causing buildup and maintenance issues.

Target Range

Maintain between 15–20 m/s for ideal transport velocity.

Above 20 m/s

Excess velocity leads to duct abrasion, especially at branches and elbows.

Tip: Use balancing dampers/blast gates and correct duct sizing to hold the target range.

Size (Diameter Selection)

The duct diameter heavily influences system performance. Wrong sizing is a common cause of poor capture and premature wear.

Too Small

High velocity causes abrasion and wear on ducts.

Signs: frequent holes and patches across the plant. Redesigning the system is a more efficient fix than patching.

Too Large

Velocity becomes too low, leading to dust fallout and buildup that reduces duct area and lowers hood efficiency.

Length & Straight Runs

Uneven loading of ductwork can abrade filters and, in extreme cases, wear through hopper walls.

Ideal rule: Provide a straight run of ≥ 8 duct diameters into the dust collector for even air and dust distribution.

If your existing run is shorter, evaluate before adding vents/branches. Begin with these questions:

  • Air capacity: Can the system handle the additional air requirement?
  • Resizing: Will resizing ductwork raise airflow to proper velocity bands?

Adding branches can create uneven loading that may require turning vanes. To avoid added maintenance, design ductwork correctly from the start.
